The Decision to Go

The Decision to Go Rahim Khan's Revelation In Peshawar, Rahim Khan tells Amir the truth about Hassan's parentage and his death. He asks Amir to go to Kabul and bring Sohrab to safety. Amir initially refuses, citing his life in America, but Rahim Khan's words—"There is a way to be good again"—echo in his mind. He realizes that this is his chance to atone for his betrayal of Hassan. Preparing for the Journey Amir buys a fake beard and traditional Afghan clothes to blend in. He hires Farid, a Tajik driver who lost his family to the wars, to take him to Kabul. Farid is initially hostile, assuming Amir is just another wealthy Afghan returning to sell property. But when Amir explains his mission—to rescue his half-brother's son—Farid's attitude softens. They set out together. The Road to Kabul The drive through the Khyber Pass is harrowing. They pass burned-out Soviet tanks, destroyed villages, and checkpoints. Amir suffers from car sickness and the weight of his mission. He sees the devastation of his homeland and feels a deep sadness. The journey is a physical and emotional trial, but he presses on, driven by the need to redeem himself.

Finding Sohrab in the Orphanage

Finding Sohrab in the Orphanage The Orphanage Director Amir and Farid find the orphanage in Karteh-Seh, a war-ravaged neighborhood. The director, Zaman, is initially suspicious, but Amir convinces him of his good intentions. Zaman reveals that a Talib official regularly takes children from the orphanage, and Sohrab was taken a month ago. He tells them the official can be found at Ghazi Stadium during soccer matches. The Horror of Ghazi Stadium Amir and Farid attend a soccer match at Ghazi Stadium. At halftime, they witness a public stoning of an adulterous couple. The executioner is a tall Talib in white with John Lennon sunglasses. Amir realizes this is the man who has Sohrab. The brutality of the Taliban regime is laid bare, and Amir is filled with dread and determination. The Meeting with the Talib After the match, Farid arranges a meeting with the Talib. They go to a large house in Wazir Akbar Khan. The Talib is revealed to be Assef, Amir's childhood tormentor. Assef recognizes Amir and mocks him. He has Sohrab brought in, dressed as a dancing boy with bells on his ankles. Assef offers to let Amir take Sohrab if he can survive a fight. Amir agrees, knowing he may die.

The Fight and Escape

The Fight and Escape The Beating Assef puts on his brass knuckles and beats Amir mercilessly. He breaks Amir's ribs, punctures his lung, and shatters his jaw. Amir laughs through the pain, feeling a strange peace. His laughter enrages Assef, who continues to beat him. Sohrab watches from the corner, terrified. Sohrab's Intervention As Assef is about to deliver a final blow, Sohrab takes out his slingshot—the same weapon Hassan once used to defend Amir. He loads a brass ball from the table and shoots Assef in the eye. Assef screams in agony, and Sohrab helps Amir to his feet. They stumble out of the house as Assef's men rush to his aid. The Escape to Pakistan Farid is waiting outside. He helps Amir into the truck and drives them out of Kabul. Amir passes out from his injuries. He wakes up in a hospital in Peshawar, his body broken but his spirit healed. Sohrab is by his side. The rescue is successful, but the trauma of the experience will leave deep scars on both of them.
